Beauty Confessionals: I learned that Cara Delevingne probably doesn’t wax her brows

A couple of years ago I attempted to do something only highly skilled professionals should be allowed to do—I waxed my own eyebrows. See, this was a sad attempt to save money because at the time I was a starving student and any money I had left over after paying for books, food and rent went straight to retail therapy. I thought it was a grand idea to save money on things I convinced myself I could do at home.

So there I was in front of the bathroom mirror, applying warm-ish wax to my face in what I thought was the perfect Cara Delevingne brow shape. After gently patting the cloth strip down and holding my breath, which is exactly what you’re not supposed to do, I yanked it from my brow and quickly repeated the process on the other side to even out the job. Feeling pleased with myself for being so savvy and DIY-chic, I took a closer look in the mirror to inspect the results. My face immediately fell from the crying-laughing emoji face I was sporting while thinking I had beat the system, to straight-up horrified. A good half of my right eyebrow was completely missing; I basically looked like I had pulled a cruel slumber party trick on myself. Panicking, I barged out of the bathroom and called an urgent house meeting with my three roommates. Their reactions? Let's just say I got a few good laughs out of them.

The fix? Brow makeup—something I recommend regardless of what shape your brows are in. My personal favourite, Too Faced Brow Envy Shaping and Defining Kit, ($49,  sephora.com)  comes stocked with customizable colours and foolproof stencils that even the most brow-challenged, like myself, can't mess up.

Let this be a lesson for us all—if you want Lily Collins brows, you better be ready to pay it up. Another tip: threading is actually much gentler on skin than waxing, but be prepared for potential waterworks—pain levels are higher. And if you're wondering what happened to that cheeky half of my eyebrow, it did grow back, but it took time!

So, good luck fellow brow devotees—I seriously hope you don't try this at home.

In what has become a three-year tradition, Toronto Life once again kicked off TIFF for the regular folks (albeit the very rich, glamorous and well-connected ones) last night with its annual celebration of Toronto's Most Stylish. 2014's list includes many of the city's most familiar names, from salon god Ray Civello to heiress and issue cover girl Chloe Rogers.

Peppered with social mainstays like Suzanne Cohon, Markus Anderson and Vanessa Morcom, the list also includes several pint sized style setters like the much-Instagrammed Violet Keeler-Fox, daughter of makeup artist Misty Fox.

The glitzy affair attracted most of the city's fashion crowd, not to mention a few special guests from beyond including Dsquared designers Dean and Dan Caten, actress Elisha Cuthbert and television personality George Strombolopolous. Wait, what were we saying about regular people?

TIFF is a time for happiness and joy and the occasional walk-by past famous people's hotels (not that anyone here is admitting to that), so how great is it to see one of the festival’s most exciting actors embodying that positivity so much?

Greta Gerwig stunned in a knee-length pink Balenciaga dress at the premiere of The Humbling last night, which is the only piece at the festival that will trump Al Pacino's scarf. (The man can accessorize.)

The dress was paired with white open-toed shoes and a black clutch (also Balenciaga) and topped off with understated Liv Hayley jewels. It’s always nice to see this sort of playfulness on the red carpet. I mean, we get it, film is serious. But making and promoting movies is fun, so why not dress to fit the vibe?

That's why this photo of Gerwig is so perfect. On top of her Jetsons-meets-Pan Am ensemble, she's glowing. And not in the celebrity gossip column, mommy blogger type of way: she looks excited to be there – or more specifically, she looks the way we'd look if we got to do the same thing: really, really happy. Specifically, she looks as happy as Al Pacino, who's proof that the red carpet doesn't always need to be defined by smoldering "We make films, not movies" stares.

The red carpet is also a great place for colour (in addition to red – hey-o!). So while neutral and/or dramatic tones are safe, reliable, and at worst "fine," colours like Gerwig's draw you in. They're cheerful and a reminder that formality doesn't have to be limited to sleeveless black gowns with trains. You can have fun, you can enjoy your evening, and you can wear bubblegum pink because you have earned it.

If that's the colour you want to wear, anyway. It looks like Gerwig is pretty pleased with her choice.

Supermodel Joan Smalls has never been one to shy away from bold lipstick; remember her incredible purple shade from this year’s Met Gala? Well, now she’s launching her own line of shades with Estée Lauder. She’s been one of the faces of the iconic brand since 2010, so while this is a totally welcome collab, it doesn’t exactly come as a surprise. But we’ll take it!

Smalls made the announcement on her Instagram account yesterday, saying “I’m so excited to announce that I’ve been working on a lipstick collection with @esteelauder! They are all matte and so chic. Here is one of my favourite shades and you guys get to pick the name! Which one do you think is the best? Unattainable, Commanding, Unstoppable.”

As if a line of all-matte lipsticks created by a supermodel wasn’t exciting enough, fans can also pick the name! There’s only one thing left to do: start commenting!

Death From Above 1979 Toronto Pop Up

Nothing says badass quite like getting a tattoo for the hell of it, which is exactly what several west enders did this week in honour of the return of local-bred gods Death from Above 1979. The two-day pop up hit Toronto's Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, acting as a makeshift tattoo parlour, merch shop and stage for duo Jesse Keeler and Sebastien Granger to kill all hopes of hearing past age 80 with deafening, mosh-inducing renditions of their '04-era dance punk ragers as well as a few new songs off their upcoming album The Physical World (it's currently streaming on iTunes). While not everyone in attendance chose to get inked on the fly, most sported one form of doodle from skulls to tombstones to just your average piglet/child hybrid.
